First long run in preparation for St. George!!!  It was a great run.

In the evening I bike 17 miles.  I rode w/ a friend who is about 15 years older than me!  She schooled me!!!  I ate her dust the whole way.  I told her husband that she fed me humble pie!!!

Had to delete data from my Garmin!!  It was all full after 13 months!!  Maybe this time I can fill it up in less time than that!

Great to see you back, Missee! Very speedy workout today.

From Missee on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 16:52:14

Thanks for your comment Lybi. I noticed that you ran the Provo City 1/2 marathon! I was there. It was very windy. It was my first "flat" 1/2 marathon. I've ran the Provo River 1/2 marathon 6 times, but that race is mostly downhill. The scenery is breathtaking!

From Lybi on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 01:42:57

Thanks Missee. What was your time for the Provo City Half and your fastest Provo River Half? I'm wondering how scared I should be of it.

From Missee on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 15:17:49

My fastest Provo River 1/2 was 1:43. The first time I ran it in 2003 I ran 2:27. It was a painful run as I didn't do any training!

Don't be scared of the race! It's a lot easier than Provo City 1/2.

It was a good run.  I was still exhausted from this weekend's bike ride.  Plan on swimming tonight after work.  I'm kid-free this week and I intend to exercise non-stop!!!  That is, if I can get away from work!

As soon as I got home from work, changed clothes, jumped on the bike and rode 3 miles to the gym.  I did 20 min stairmaster, interval speed training on level 12 for 16 minutes and level 14 for 4 minutes.  Then a friend found me and we lifted on back for several exercises.  By this time it was getting dusk and I needed to ride home b4 dark.

When I got home I re-arranged furniture for a few minutes and then a friend asked me to go for a bike ride----in the dark!  Not the brightest of ideas, but I did it anyway.  I probably did another 6 miles on bike--forgot to take the Garmin!

Finally got home and put in an hour of work @ the computer.  I definitely need more sleep!

Holy Cow!  What a morning!  The Power of a Partner is undeniable.  If it hadn't been for my awesome running partner, it wouldn't have happened today!  We both were so tired this morning.  We planned on doing a really short run, but happy that we in 5.

Avg mile pace was 8:59 which is significantly better than Tuesday.

One of us has to drive 6 or 7 miles to meet up to run and with gas prices what they are..............we have to put in the miles to make it worth it.  On Friday, I'm going to ride my bike to her house to save gas money and get in some cross training.

Speaking of gas prices, today is the beginning of my eliminate driving campaign.  I am going to try to ride my bike most places I go.  I think I can even do grocery shopping on bike if I take my bike trailer and don't buy too many things.

I've already started this a bit and the boys love it.  The girls have issues w/ walking to church.  It is about 1.25 miles away!!!  I tell them that is nothing compared to our pioneer ancestors!!!

New rule for me:  I can only go out on Tuesday and Saturday nights cuz my running schedule allows me to sleep in on Wednesdays and Sundays.  Hope I can stick this plan.  It will allow me to get more sleep!

Happy Day to all!

In all seriousness, I'm so blessed to have you as a partner!!!

From Maria on Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 17:24:39

Wow, I don't even know how you can function on 4 hours of sleep day after day, let alone run! I need at least 6.5 hours, and 7 to 8 even better, to have good energy throughout the day. Good rule for going out, hope you can stick to it! Blogging helps - if you put your hours of sleep in, everyone will see it, and now that you announced the new rule, you're accountable :).

You're right. It's hard though when a friend calls up at 10:30 p.m. or so and says, "Hey! Want to go to Wal-Mart?" An hour and 1/2 later, I arrive home with less money and loss of valuable sleep time!!!

Avg Mile Pace 9:01.  Running Partner's Garmin said it was 8:53.  Why the difference?  Not that 8 secs is a big deal or anything, but our distances were way off, too.

It was a great run this morning.  The scenery was beautiful and the weather was almost perfect.  We only planned on doing 9 or 10 miles, but it would have been 10 1/2 at our normal ending so we decided to run a tad more to make it an even 11 miles.

I didn't ride my bike there as planned because I forgot to buy some red flashy lights.  It's still a bit dark at 5:00 a.m.

I didn't get to bed early last night, either. :-(  My plan was to come straight home after work and do laundry and dishes and remote access my job and get some work done.  Instead, picked up my kids from their dad's house and took the Father's Day shopping.  Then we all went to a friends house and had pizza with her and her kids.  Then, she and I go out and people watch at a convenience store and drink bottled water.  Way exciting, huh?

Needless to say, I didn't get home very early, thus no sleep, again.  This has to stop.  I NEED SLEEP!!!!!!!!!  I'm sure everyone can relate!!!

Now it's off to work I go!!!

My running partner called me @ 4:45 a.m. and cancelled on me so I was able to sleep for another hour.  It was great.

I retrieved my daughter from EFY this morning.  When we arrived home I tried to talk her into going for a bike ride with me and I was rejected!  :-(  So, in my frustration, I decided to go for a run!  I needed to break in my new running skirt!!!  I love it.

I only planned on running 6 miles or so because of the longer run yesterday.  Changed my mind at about mile 5 and took a different route.  I stopped at two convenience stores to grab a handful of ice.  I was so thirsty.  I think that is the only benefit to running in civilization.  I prefer non-civilization running, though.

I'm going home to Wyoming at the end of June and look forward to running in the sandhills or down by the Shoshone river.

Anyway, the pace today was a bit slow but it is always that way when I run by myself and don't bring the mp3 w/ me.

I was able to drag my daughter to the pool after my run.  That felt great except for the wind.  Can't wait until my little kids come back from their dad's.  They are more willing to go do things with me.

On a final note - Go me!!!  I ran 5 days this week.  I know for some of you that is nothing, but for me, it is cause for celebration!!!  Hmmmmmmm.......What should I go eat???  LOL

Andy, the running skirt is awesome, thanks for asking. This one is all black so it goes well with anything! Wow! That sounded too girly for me, but it's true. My other one is pink and a dark purplish/periwinkle color. Didn't go well w/ much besides black and white!

Walter, sleep is blessed!!! I feel better when I get more sleep, but it is so hard to come by. My bro is doing some training for the air force before he goes to JAG school and he tells me they are only getting 4 or 5 hours of sleep. I laughed. I said that is normal for me!!

Nice run today! :) Hey curious - is "max 6:29" your max sustained pace? How long were you able to keep that at?

Hahaha funny thing that you mentioned finding two dimes. I know as a kid I always watched my dad head out for a 3-4 miler and he'd come back with 8 or 9 soda cans he picked up on the way, one on each finger. He comes running up the driveway swinging his arms looking like a crazy alien runner and he smiles and goes "Hey look, Benn! I'm a professional runner! I made 45 cents today!". Well something must have stuck because now I do the same thing! HAhaha. Hope Tuesday is a great one for you!

Missee-do you take naps during the day? and how do you do it? I was able to do that up till 2 years ago, I got mono and it knocked me out. Now with running so much, i have to sleep. Where do you do your runs at? Im just off of 3200 W. and 104th south and always run up to daybreak but i occasionally run down 3200 w. to 7800 s. and down to 2200 w. and do a loop. The easiest run if you can drive to it is garner village. There was alot of people out this morning!

From missee on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 11:55:40

Benn - The max is just my Garmin said my max speed was -- I guarantee I didn't maintain it for very long.

My dad used to collect Indian beads that he would find in ant hills while out running! He would also collect little glass bottles.

Walter - I don't know what a nap is!!!I run in the Daybreak area on Mondays and Fridays. Run around the lake to the roundabout on 104 and 4000 and take the bridges, etc. Love the changing lights on the lake, though the water hasn't been turned on lately.

There were tons of people running in Daybreak yesterday. I want to know where they all were in February when it was 15 degrees!!!

Good luck on x-training today! Question for you .. what kind of bike do you use? I'm thinking of getting an entry level road bike for 495 (originally 1100) through bikesdirect.com. It comes with free aero bars. :) It's "Dawes 1500" which I think is a Canadian brand or Euro-Canadian. Do you think it'd be a good investment? Right now I use a Bianchi Boardwalk hybrid bicycle. I think I could ride more efficiently and go a lot faster if I get a real road bike.

avg 9:09 -- pathetic, but considering lack of sleep and amount of talking we did this morning, understandable.

Because of circumstances kind of beyond my control, I had to literally RUN through Wal-Mart, buy shoes for son, RUN to checkout, RUN to car and drive like a maniac to church.  All this running in 3" heels.  Not recommended.  Ankles are a bit sore, but it was worth it cuz I was able to get my sons to the church to go to Cub Country with only seconds to spare!

Cross training didn't happen yesterday.  :-(  Had to go to a study group for CLA exam for legal assistants.  Taking text next year, but need to study a lot!!!!

This was supposed to be a 10k, but the course was a little short.  Drove for 8.5 hours the night before, so my pre-race diet was really poor.  It was mainly sunflower seeds, diet pepsi, and Smarties.  The girl I was hoping to be there wasn't so I wasn't able to see if I am faster now! :-(

The only girl that beat me was my younger sister.  She's an awesome runner.  I told her husband that my goal was just to keep her in sight!  He asked me if I had brought my binoculars!!  I needed them.  She beat me by at least 4 minutes!

Course was a bit boring.  Run in a square - twice.

Great race. Maybe I need to try your pre-race diet.

From Walter on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 09:28:13

Sounds like you had fun up there! I hate race courses that you have to loop on! I ran a 15k in west jordan the decked in red a few years back that looped around 3 times. It was so boring the third time around I wanted to scream! Diet pepsi and smarties huh? A little far from the traditional spaghetti dont you think?

From Benn on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 12:25:51

ALRIGHT!!! SUPER RACE! HAHA I feel the same way when I race my younger brother. He's 16 and kicks the pants off of me even though he seems to never train!

Diet Pepsi and Smarties ... the prerace fuel of champs! woot woot!

Hey question for you. I have been clocking some pretty fast times on hilly courses around my house this week. What's an average speed that I should shoot for to even consider placing in a pack of a 50 mile bike race? Right now I think my best is like 30.4 miles in 1:38

From missee on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 16:45:35

Andy - I think you could probably find a pre-race diet that would be a tad bit more helpful than Smarties and diet Pepsi! I fell off the wagon when I went to Wyoming this past week. Thoroughly enjoyed at least one diet Pepsi a day!!! ;-)

Walter - Had tons of fun in Wyoming! I love going home!

Benn - I've come to accept the fact that my lil' sis will always beat me, and if ANYONE is going to beat me, it better be my sister! LOL

As far as biking goes, I really can't help you w/ that. I've only been biking regularly for about 1 month! I'm a newbie!!! Don't know much myself. Good luck finding someone w/ expertise and experience!

After running, I sat on the step outside my front door, leaned my head back against the garage wall and took a nap.  It was awesome but made me late for work!  Oh, well!  If only they would fire me!!!

So you doing DesNews 10k on Thurs?? What 10k is the toughest one??

From missee on Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 13:51:22

No, on Thursday I'm running in Provo. It is the 2008 Pioneer Classic. I think this is the first year they have done this race. They were running a special that if you signed up last week on Thursday the entry fee was only $13. Can't beat that price.

Information about the Toughest 10k can be found at http://www.co.wasatch.ut.us/fair/10_k.htm. I've never done it, but I'd love to see what it's all about.

Quick question:  Race Overall Place - Does that mean overall of each gender or everyone altogether?  I think I was the 5th woman, but the results weren't broken down that way.

This was one tough race.  I have never run so many ups and downs!  It was awesome, but that hill in the beginning was enough to make me question my sanity.  Why do we do this to ourselves?

The course said it was 6.2 miles, but my Garmin said it was only 5.9, so I don't know what to believe!  Oh, well.  It was a good race and I'm happy w/ my time and place.

Mile 1 - 9:04 Mile 2 - 9:02 Mile 3 - 7:05 Oh, yeah!!! BTW - it was way downhill!!! LOL Mile 4 - 7:30 Mile 5 - 8:00 Mile 6 - 8:20 - I felt like I was dying on this mile!

From Kim on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 15:48:52

I will be at the Provo River 1/2 this weekend. I would love to meet you! I am not going to be in the race. I decided to do my own run while Tom is running so I can be there to watch him come in for a change. If we both race he is always there for me because he is much speedier than me. Watch for people in fastrunning blog singlets and ask if they know Kim or Tom. And, Yes, I am running St. George. It will be my first marathon. Hopefully I'll see you Saturday! Good luck in the race!

From missee on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:09:41

I posted more about the 1/2 on that day so I didn't want to be redundant.

I saw one guy w/ a fastrunning.com shirt, but I didn't say anything. I go to most of my races alone and sometimes I'm outgoing and just talk to anybody and everybody and sometimes I don't say a word at all. Just depends on the mood!

Doing a triathlon on August 30 and then a 10k on Sept 6 at the U and then I'm probably done racing until the marathon.

From missee on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 13:20:08

yeah, there were tons and tons of people. And, if you looked right at me and didn't say anything, that's ok, cuz I probably looked right at you and didn't say anything either.

I did see the two guys from my ward that were running it. I beat them both! Made me smile!

How was your race?

From walter on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 13:52:30

Its always nice to be the ward hero you know!? When I first moved into this area 4 years ago everyone ran around here and I could tell they wanted to know how good everyone was so our bishop made a friendly competition to everyone in our area to run the Des news 10k so we could see who the elite runners of the stake were. Luckily I won and his son came right behind be by a few seconds. He was running for Bingham HS at the time. So I got to wear the crown and title which was nice. My race was good, I had a bit of a stomach problem, but I PR'd and it was a nice day.

From missee on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 14:03:56

That's awesome to PR. I think I was slower by a minute or so, but considering circumstances, I'm happy w/ my time.

No one runs in my ward. I talked a couple ladies into running the other day and they could barely do three miles at an 11:00 minute pace. One of the did a 5k the other weekend and she placed 2nd in her age group. She was kinda miffed cuz her husband place 1st in his and he doesn't exercise much. Sure helped that he was the ONLY one in his age group!!! LOL

From walter on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 14:20:58

Thats hilarious! I have a friend who did a tri with me last year and he was 3rd out of 3 in his age group! But we didnt want to hurt his feelings and tell him that! He still talks about that. One of these days I may have to humble him!? You have done this one several times right. It was my first and they put the hill in it right? So im anxious to know how the course really was before they detoured us around the so called fire.

This was a tough race.  Every year I tell myself I'm just going to run to enjoy the scenery and every  year I run as fast as I can.  It hurts at the end and I ask myself why I do it.

The weather was great.  The start was horrible.  Just too many people and I should have started closer to the start.  Their clock had me two minutes slower than my Garmin.  I posted my Garmin time instead of their time.

Avg mile pace was 8:00 min

333rd of 1767 runners

124th of 1156 women

16th or 193 for my age group.

For my level of training and the my horrible cold I had for the 10 days prior to the race, I'm very pleased w/ my time.  I would love to get 1:40 next year.

I have a sprint triathlon in Riverton on the 30th. Extremely worried about the swim. My biking partner is doing it also and despite her being about 15 years older than me, I think she's going to beat me. I have such a hard time losing!!! Shouldn't cuz I seldom win a race......oh, yeah, I have never won a race (since freshman year of high school), so I should be used to it by now! Oh, well. It keeps me humble! LOL

From missee on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 16:49:41

sorry it's taken me so long to reply...I'm finding life too busy to keep up on this blog! Did 10 miles last Saturday and 14.5 the Saturday before that. Can't wait for this marathon to be done!

Hey great run! I saw you at mile 25! Your right about help at the end. It was soo cold and I found the park bathroom for a break from the rain. It was just a horrid day. Looks like you got your BQ out of the race. Very nice! I dont know if you remember I yelled your name on the last mile. So if you subconsciously remember hearing your name, it was me! lol

From missee on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 15:12:23

Thanks, subconsciously I'm sure I remember you yelling my name and that is where I got the extra energy at the end to kick it in!!!

That's a joke. My kick was pathetic, but it was there....a little.

From walter on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 15:14:24

After running myself it more appreciable to yell, Your almost there! I wanted to whack that guy with the 25.2 mile sign that was yelling, 1 mile to go! Oh give me death!

Just a short easy run....The right distance and speed.

The bad news is that I sustained an injury playing volleyball in the evening.  Definitely won't be running for a couple days!!!  Hope to run the race in Lindon on Saturday so I hope everything is better by then!

Can't believe how easy the recovery has been.  Even mentally, I'm almost ready to think about running another marathon in a year or so!!!  I just have to convince my running partner that she wants to run another one, too!

Hey Misseeeeeeeee... How's the ankle?

From missee on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 15:08:45

Ankle is feeling better. It should be back to normal by tomorrow!!! At least I'm hoping so! Thanks for asking!

Ankle only hurts when I run downhill.  Today's course only had downhill on the pedestrian overpasses on Bangerter, so it wasn't too bad.

With less than 1/2 mile to go, I biffed it!  Hit some rocks on the sidewalk that I couldn't see and down I went.  Hit sidewalk and rolled three times -- I'm sure it looked fairly comical!!!  First thing I checked was to see if my tights were torn!!  That would have made me very sad - they are my favorite bright purple tights!

Took this morning off.  When can you tell if you are wisely taking time off to heal from an injury or if you're using it as an excuse and take the time off cuz you're lazy?!?!?!?

Running again tomorrow, for sure.  I need it more for my mental health than for my physical well-being.

I've gone over that question numerous times in my head since January. I felt like I was a complete lazy head. But then when I came back to jogging last month I discovered hey! I think that time off was a good thing! So don't worry you aren't lazy. Just being PROACTIVE the way I see it haha

I think you're right. This morning it felt great to run. Only did 4.7 miles, but it was good.

Biked 20 miles today.  Felt so bad and so good at the same time.  I could tell I haven't been on the bike for several weeks.  My biking partner left me in the dust, as usual!!!

After the ride, I felt so much better prepared to handle the day and to be a nice mom to my kids!!  I know all this exercising isn't to stay slim and trim, it is to stay sane and stable!!!

It was a good run this a.m.  Pace wasn't too fast, but felt right.  Had a very eventful weekend so had to tell Running Partner all about it.  That tends to slow us down a bit.

Kept it short because Running Partner's IT band is still giving her problems.

My ankle is completely better.  I am so happy.  Hope to play basketball tonight!  Haven't played in weeks, cuz I didn't want to get injured!

I made it to the gym!!  Lifted some weights on glutes, quads, and triceps.  Then shot baskets for 20 minutes or so!  Everything felt great except for the part of my lower leg that I injured two months ago.  It didn't feel good on the quick stops!!  Can't believe it still hurts!

How is your training going!?

From missee on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:56:21

Training is pretty lame right now. My running partner is still suffering from IT band issues from the marathon and I don't have it in me to get up at 0500 to run by myself. So we average 2-3 runs a week, about 4 - 5 miles each time. I've started going to the gym twice a week to do some cardio and weights, but mostly to play basketball.

Thanks for asking!! ;-)

Long time no hear. Its good to run even when your feeling like that. I envy you right now! Ill be back at it in 3 weeks or so. Im going to try swimming next week and see how it goes. Keep plugging away at those pesky miles! Hows your friend doing?

Tough run this morning!!!  Why can't people shovel their sidewalks???  The ice is so dangerous!  Snow is just hard work!

Hit a chunk of ice in the road and biffed it.  I was lucky I had enough time to roll, so no major face-planting!!!

My boss and co-workers strongly hinted that I was not welcome at work today if I didn't go running.  I didn't run yesterday and I was a very difficult person to live/work with!!!  So, the general consensus is that I am required to run or I can find another job!!!  LOL ;-)

24 degrees this a.m.  Fairly pleasant!

I'm so tired.  Went to the gym last night - played basketball, lifted a bit, swam 10 laps.

Ran this a.m. at 5:15.  Thermometer said it was 19 degrees, but it felt more like 5 when we were running into the wind.  The snow on the trail was so hard to run in.  Took two minutes longer on that mile!

Despite the cold and lack of sleep, it was good to get up and run.

8.4 degrees -- it was cold!

So much snow -- it was insane!!  Up to my knees in some places.  My poor ankles were cold.  Have to buy socks that will cover my ankles!

Went to the gym in the evening.  Shot baskets for 45 minutes, 300 tummy crunches, 10 minutes stair stepper.

I'm tired!

32.4 degrees, but the wind was so bitter.

Again, lots of snow and ice!!!  Sometimes it was so icy had to walk just to stay upright and not fall into the street in front of the cars!!

All in all, it was a good run.  Got home, showered and crawled back into bed.  I was 40 minutes late to work, cuz I just couldn't pull myself out of bed!
